We look forward to welcoming you to the Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music (TRCM) for your AMEB examination.
This page is designed to support all candidates, whether enrolled through the Conservatorium or privately, in preparing for their exam day. For many students, this is their first formal music assessment. Understanding the process in advance helps reduce uncertainty and allows candidates to focus on performing at their best.
TRCM acts as an official examination venue. AMEB manages enrolments, scheduling, and assessment requirements, while TRCM supports the delivery of examinations onsite by coordinating rooms, facilities, and day-to-day logistics.
All candidates are required to contact TRCM at least two weeks prior to their exam to confirm their details. While AMEB provides an official exam notice, this step ensures that the venue has accurate information and can prepare accordingly. It also allows time to arrange any additional requirements, such as warm-up rooms, and to resolve any discrepancies before the day.
Preparation should extend beyond learning pieces. Candidates are expected to meet all syllabus requirements, which may include technical work, aural tests, sight-reading, and general knowledge. A well-prepared candidate understands their repertoire musically as well as technically.
All candidates must bring original copies of their music, even if performing from memory. Instruments (other than piano) and all required equipment must also be supplied by the candidate. If accompaniment is required, this must be arranged independently in advance.
Candidates should arrive approximately 15 minutes before their scheduled exam time. On arrival, all candidates, accompanists, and accompanying adults must sign in at the Office.
To ensure a smooth and focused environment, we ask that noise is kept to a minimum near exam rooms. Students must remain under the supervision of a parent or responsible adult at all times when not in the exam room.
Parking is available in the Tamworth Square car park adjacent to the Conservatorium, which offers free three-hour parking. The Conservatorium car park is reserved for staff.
If a warm-up room has been requested in advance, it will be made available where possible. Due to limited space, these cannot be arranged on the day.
Examinations are conducted privately between the candidate and the examiner. Teachers, parents, and observers are not permitted in the exam room. This ensures consistency, fairness, and alignment with AMEB assessment protocols.
The examiner will guide the candidate through each section of the exam. Candidates should listen carefully, respond clearly, and perform to
the best of their ability. The exam is an opportunity to demonstrate progress and musical understanding, rather than perfection.
At the conclusion of the exam, candidates may leave the venue once they have signed out if required. Results are issued by AMEB and are not available through the Conservatorium.
We wish all candidates every success and encourage them to approach the experience as a valuable step in their musical development.
