Our Commitment to Child Safety

Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music is committed to providing a safe, inclusive environment for all children and young people. We align with the NSW Child Safe Standards and embed child safety across all areas of our work.

Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music (TRCM) is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and respectful environment where all children and young people can learn, create, and thrive.

Child safety is central to our organisational culture, governance, and everyday practice. We recognise that children and young people have the right to feel safe, be heard, and be protected from harm.

TRCM is a participant in the NSW Child Safe Scheme and aligns its policies, procedures, and practices with the NSW Child Safe Standards, overseen by the NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian.

Our commitment to child safety applies to all staff, contractors, volunteers, students, visiting artists, and external organisations engaged with the Conservatorium.

Child Safe Culture

We foster a culture that:

  • Prioritises the safety and wellbeing of children and young people
  • Promotes respectful, professional, and appropriate interactions
  • Encourages children to speak up and be listened to
  • Supports staff to understand and uphold their child-safe responsibilities

Child safety is embedded across teaching, administration, events, ensembles, and outreach programs.

Our Approach to the Child Safe Standards

TRCM's approach reflects the intent of the NSW Child Safe Standards through:

  • Leadership and governance that prioritise child safety
  • Clear expectations for behaviour and professional boundaries
  • Safe recruitment, screening, and induction practices
  • Ongoing staff training and professional learning
  • Child-centred and inclusive practices
  • Accessible reporting and complaint pathways
  • Continuous monitoring and improvement

Rather than treating child safety as a one-off compliance task, TRCM embeds child-safe thinking into daily oprations and long-term planning.

Safe People

All TRCM staff and regular contractors:

  • Hold a current NSW Working With Children Check (WWCC)
  • Complete Child Safe training annually
  • Receive child-safe expectations as part of induction
  • Are bound by TRCM's Code of Conduct and professional standards

Staff are supported to recognise indicators of harm, respond appropriately to concerns, and maintain professional boundaries at all times.

Safe Envrinments

TRCM actively works to ensure physical, emotional, and online environments are safe, including:

  • Supervised teaching and rehearsal spaces
  • Clear procedures for excursions, performances, and offsite activities
  • Risk management and incident reporting processes
  • Online lesson delivery using approved platforms
  • Discouraging staff-student interaction through personal social media

Inclusion, Diversity, and Student Voice

TRCM values and respects the diversity of children and young people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, students with disability, culturally and linguistically diverse students, and students of diverse gender identities.

We are committed to:

  • Creating welcoming and inclusive learning environments
  • Recognising children as active participants in their own safety
  • Encouraging feedback and listening to student perspectives
  • Adjusting supports to meet individual needs
