Junior Ukulele is an introductory ensemble for children aged 5 to 8 who are beginning their musical journey on the ukulele. The program provides a supportive and engaging environment where students learn the fundamentals of playing through age-appropriate songs, simple chord patterns, and basic strumming techniques.
Designed for absolute beginners and those with minimal experience, rehearsals focus on developing instrument independence, rhythmic awareness, and coordination. Students learn standard tuning and begin to explore how chords work together in simple musical contexts. Singing is optional, with the primary emphasis placed on instrumental playing.
Junior Ukulele also supports important learning behaviours. Students are encouraged to be respectful of others, work cooperatively, and take responsibility for their instrument with appropriate assistance. Small class sizes (maximum 12 students) ensure individual attention and a positive learning environment.
While Junior Ukulele does not have a formal performance outcome, students may be invited to participate in studio concerts when appropriate. The ensemble provides a strong foundation for future musical learning and is an ideal pathway into Uke-e-stra, where students continue developing their skills in a performance-focused setting.
Junior Ukulele rehearses on Mondays from 4:30–5 pm at the Conservatorium
