Theory

Understand the language. Strengthen the musician.

Music theory provides the framework that underpins confident, independent musicianship. At the Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music, our Music Theory & Musicianship program supports students of all ages and instruments, from beginners through to advanced learners, and is designed to complement practical instrumental and vocal study.

Students develop fluency in reading notation, understanding rhythm and harmony, recognising musical patterns, and making informed musical decisions. Lessons integrate written theory, practical application, and (where appropriate) aural training, ensuring knowledge is directly connected to real music-making. Theory study supports faster learning of repertoire, stronger sight-reading, improved ensemble skills, and greater confidence in lessons and performances.

For students wishing to pursue formal qualifications, we offer preparation for AMEB Theory of Music, Musicianship, and Music Craft syllabi. Practical music examinations at higher grades often require a theory subject to be completed in order to release the practical certificate, making theory an important component of structured musical pathways.

Lessons are individually tailored, allowing students to study for enjoyment, examination preparation, school music support, or advanced academic pathways.

What's the difference?

Theory of Music

Traditional written theory with no aural component. Topics include keys and scales, intervals, chords, rhythm and time, transposition, terms and signs, rhythmic invention, and (at higher grades) harmonisation and melody writing. Exams are taken online.

Musicianship

Similar written content to Theory of Music up to Grade 3, with the addition of an aural component from Grade 4 onwards. Students complete written and aural sections consecutively in one sitting. Aural skills include recognition of scale forms, intervals, triads, motion, and cadences.

Music Craft

Integrated written and aural study at every grade level, closely aligned with HSC and tertiary music study. Preliminary to Grade 4 exams are taken online. Grades 5 and 6 are sat in August each year at the Clarence Street AMEB facility.
