Guitar and ukulele are flexible, portable instruments with immediate musical pay-off and long-term depth. At the Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music, students can learn acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele through individual lessons that are tailored to age, experience, and musical goals. Beginners build strong fundamentals, including posture, hand position, rhythm, chord changes, and basic reading or chord charts, while more experienced players develop technique, tone, stylistic fluency, and performance confidence.

Our tutors support a wide range of styles, including pop, rock, country, blues, jazz, folk, and classical approaches. Students who enjoy creating can also explore songwriting, accompaniment skills, improvisation, and ensemble playing. What instruments are included in this program?

Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele. If you’re interested in a related fretted instrument, ask; some staff may be able to assist depending on availability.

Do I need my own instrument to start?

Ideally, yes. Regular home practice is essential. If you haven’t purchased yet, we can advise on suitable beginner models and sizes before you commit.

Is ukulele easier than guitar for young beginners?

Often, yes. Ukuleles are smaller, have softer strings, and allow students to play simple songs quickly, which supports motivation, especially in early primary years.

Should I start on acoustic or electric guitar?

Either is fine. Start with what will keep you practising. Acoustic is simple and portable; electric can be easier on the fingers and offers a wide range of sounds.

What age can children begin?

Many children start ukulele from around 5–6 years, and guitar from around 6–8 years with an appropriately sized instrument and age-appropriate lesson pacing.

Do I need to read music?

No. Students can begin with chord charts and rhythm work. Music reading can be introduced progressively alongside practical skills.

Can you help with school band or assessment requirements?

Yes. Tutors can support repertoire preparation, technique development, and performance strategies aligned with school needs.

Will lessons include songwriting or improvisation?

They can. If this is a goal, your tutor can incorporate songwriting, arranging, improvisation, and accompaniment skills.

Are performance opportunities available?

Yes. Performance pathways depend on readiness and programming, but students are encouraged to participate in concerts, studio performance classes, or ensembles where available.

What should I buy as a first instrument?

A well-set-up beginner instrument matters more than brand. We recommend seeking advice before purchasing, especially for correct size, comfortable action, and reliable tuning stability.
